Diabetic Kidney Disease

Diabetic Kidney Disease

Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD), also known as diabetic nephropathy, is a serious complication of diabetes mellitus that affects the kidneys. It is characterized by gradual deterioration of kidney function over time due to damage to the small blood vessels in the kidneys caused by high blood sugar levels. At Dr. Sawant’s Diabetes Care Centre, we specialize in the management and prevention of diabetic kidney disease to preserve kidney function and improve overall health outcomes.

  • Poorly Controlled Diabetes: Persistent high blood sugar levels over time can damage the kidneys’ filtering units (glomeruli) and impair kidney function.

  • High Blood Pressure (Hypertension): Uncontrolled hypertension can further damage blood vessels in the kidneys and accelerate kidney disease progression.

  • Genetic Predisposition: Family history of kidney disease or diabetes can increase the risk of developing DKD.

  • Smoking: Tobacco use can worsen kidney damage in individuals with diabetes.

  • Obesity: Excess body weight and unhealthy lifestyle habits contribute to the risk of developing DKD.
